So all done and dusted, back home and facing the real world again. I received some last pictures from race media, some video links and also summarised some race stats.
- Official total time was 56hours, 32Min 41sec at an average of 15.58 km/hr.
- There were 104 riders of which 81 did the complete route in time and I finished 52 – although it wasn’t about the place.
- Interesting was how average HR dropped to around 100 day 5, also the time when I had tummy bug but I am sure a factor of fatigue.
- Calory intake on a self supporting ride was a major factor and did require gels in addition to all the bars, sandwiches and fruit I could take carry.
- Planning hydration stops was critical. Back-pack and Skratch were winners.
- Self navigation, especially on the first days, were intense. On one day getting lost in a village for about 10 minutes.
- Riding with other riders and supporting each other – which I did after day 3, is a major factor in finishing. Day 5 at 198 km alone and lost power on Garmin would have been impossible to finish without riding as a group.
- Day 4 I thought I was invincible when going down fast slopes. Not only brought back to earth and lucky to get a spare tyre, one hour penalty and still stay in the race.
- Gearing for the ride was 34 in front, 10/52 rear. Day 3 was a hard one where I would have loved a 32. My Trek 9.8 and suspension otherwise amazing – thanks also for Gear Change for looking after me and the bike – already ready for the next adventure!
