I was given a bottle of the Groot Constantia Governors Reserve 2018 by Boela Gerber, the winemaker at Groot Constantia. Somehow, getting a bottle of wine from the winemaker has a lot of meaning and that it needs to be enjoyed at a special occasion. I know Boela is also a Cape Wine Master and regularly contributes to the lecture program of the Diploma course I am attending.
The occasion presented itself in early January when I was invited by life-long friends for a braai at their farm in Zonquasdrift, near Riebeek-Kasteel. Their farm used to be mainly vineyards and was their passion and grass roots connection to SA for many years. Economically wine farming was not viable so the majority of the farm has now been leased out and converted to citrus. Living in Munich, Germany, they still have the old Cape Dutch rambling farmhouse on the farm which is their escape and connection with Africa. The house is a mix of South African and German tradition. Basic, thoughtful with a touch of art from Antoinette.
So going up for an evening braai means bringing some good wine and lots of fresh salads and bread. Their contribution was beautiful steaks and a braai fire made from old vines in the old store houses. The late afternoon sunset seen through a haze of dust and the heat of the day still pulsing away. Having moved from the old style kitchen to sitting on the veranda over-looking the garden and farm. Catching up all the latest news, memories and always a good debate about like in SA.
A table with fresh wholesome food and steaks that have survived the vine fire. The meal started with a lovely wine and I had opened the Gouverners Reserve which I think the occasion deserved. The wine brought everything together. The Bordeaux style with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Cabernet Franc blend. The subtle oak and ripe fruit flavours made it a perfect match with the braai meal. A very delicious balanced, smooth wine. The wine, ambiance, our friendship and food created memories for all of us that I think we will always cherish. Thanks again Boela.
I have below the wine notes for the 2019 which is now available.
