Hell of the South YouTube Race Video
Attakwas started a long time ago as a race in January with the goal to stay fit during December Jan and have a goal to work to. It then became part of Epic preparation – Pioneer / Atta / Tankwa. We also did Atta 20, 21,22 with cycling group introducing them to the “challenge of Atta”. It has always been a feel-good race for me. Hard but also teaching me many lessons on the way. How to deal with the heat. Hydration. Metal strength when riding solo. I didn’t ride 2024 as I felt a bit burnt out. But this year it called again, and I was actually excited to see how I would do. The weather was on our side with max temp mid 30’s. The last two hours overcast and light winds. I rode it comfortably and so pleased with finishing in a reasonable time but also feeling good. Also kudo’s to the organizers and vehicle transfer team (Kalbas Nel – transferring my 3rd Fortuna).
I met Jenny and Shaun for dinner the night before and stayed at the Queens Hotel. After the race I stayed the night in Mossel Bay, treated myself to a finishing dinner, bear and wine before heading back on Sunday. A great weekend and very pleased.
