I entered this race because I really wanted to get an idea of riding in the Eastern Cape Karoo. The farm Dwarsvlei is 10 km from Middleburg in the Eastern Cape. After a road trip to East London and PE I arrived on a very cold Friday afternoon. Snow in the mountains right up to Natal highlands – Van Reenen got closed that weekend. A proper farm feel where I found my glamping tent and lots of blankets. Registration and preparation for the Friday evening night ride.
The field consisted of a wide range of riders, MTB and E-Bikes, so an opportunity for everyone to experience the Karoo. Many had never done bush night rides and because of the cold weather, only a selected few braved the conditions. Not long into the ride a snowy rain started so it was a proper and chilly introduction to the night Karoo. After a hot shower some real food and wine in the barn before a welcome snuggle into bed after a long week.
Day 2 was a solid ride out and back. The ride back was directly into the cold wind coming off the snow from the days before. I had the right kit, rode solidly and just loved being out. Some long stretches of gravel and great for inexperienced riders.
The afternoon had entertainment in an old barn, wheelbarrow races and rooster-koek with G&T’s. An amazing gees and very relaxed enjoying Karoo hospitality.
Day 3 much warmer and much more technical with lots of single tracks. Fun day out in the Karoo. Felt good and strong.
Ride the Karoo was a fun event and especially good for average riders looking for a fun weekend of glamping in the Karoo. Not an event for racing snakes so attracted families, kids and pets. So great experience and highly recommended for average riders wanting some fun in the Karoo.
